Position Summary

F5 Product Owners are a key member of our Agile Scrum teams that develop technology solutions for vital functions within F5, such as product management, sales, services, accounting. The mission of Technology Services is to build a more responsive, nimble and agile F5, supporting internal and external customer needs. The Senior Product Owner role combines essential product ownership duties for higher impact and/or more technically complex products with thought leadership and team mentorship responsibilities.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Represent the user and business to your Scrum teams, rallying the team around product goals and user needs

  • Participate in all Agile/Scrum ceremonies

  • Articulate and refine requirements / stories and define acceptance criteria in a manner understandable to the Agile Scrum / Kanban Team (e.g., INVEST)

  • Own, maintain, and prioritize the product backlog for your teams

  • Make/drive timely tradeoff decisions throughout the development process

  • Define sprint and quarterly goals and objectives with the teams

  • Demonstrate products to stakeholders

  • Identify and manage dependencies across teams within the product / solution

  • Partner with relevant teams to prepare for quarterly “big room” planning events

  • Convene and facilitate technical discussions with engineering as part of articulating and refining requirements and understanding engineering realities

  • Communicate trade-offs between customer expectations and engineering realities to stakeholders and align on prioritization

  • Stay up to date on relevant industry trends and best practices and constantly exchange ideas

  • Advocate effectively for work to address tech debt when needed

  • Proactively contribute to improving our team’s product practices

  • Mentor other product owners, e.g. provide feedback on stories and other deliverables, be a sounding board and advise on how to slice features and navigate challenging conversations, etc.

  • May oversee the activities of other product owners

  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience of working an Enterprise Search solution especially using Coveo platform.

  • Strong understanding of Search implementations. Has high level technical understanding of Coveo or has keenness to self-learn.

  • Experience in collaborating with PMs and stakeholders to create quarterly \ yearly roadmaps for the scrum team.

  • Demonstrates effective team dynamics, conflict resolution, mentoring, and servant leadership skills

  • Experience within a SAFe or Agile methodology and utilizing Agile practices

  • Effective representing the user and business to the team from a solid foundation of deep user understanding and knowledge of the business

  • Unafraid to dig deep into data

  • Strong facilitation skills within teams and ability to lead cross-functional teams

  • Strong negotiation skills

  • Strong oral and written communication skills with the ability to influence others internally and externally

  • Experience resolving issues with higher levels of management

  • Balance of technical and business acumen; able to communicate what is possible and what will have biggest impact on business

  • Trusted domain expert relied upon by partners to make informed decisions on product priorities (or direction)

  • Be familiar with modern software engineering practices, such as CI / CD, DevOps, test driven development, etc.

  • Knows enough about software development and architecture to be a good dance partner for engineers

  • Understands and effectively advocates for non-functional requirements (NFRs), performance standards, security standards and the need to refactor

  • Learns quickly what’s easy vs hard

  • Skilled viewing challenges from both the “forest” and the “trees”

  • Is a problem solver more than a problem “alerter”

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience as a Product Owner on an Agile Scrum team developing web based solutions and experience with Enterprise Search solutions esp. Coveo; SAFe experience a plus

  • 6+ years of experience working with a diverse set of partners such as sales, engineering, legal, customer success, support services, marketing etc.

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, computer science or related field

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Duties are performed in a normal office environment while sitting at a desk or computer table. 

  • Duties require the ability to utilize a computer, communicate over the telephone, and read printed material.

  • Duties may require being on call periodically and working outside normal working hours (evenings and weekends).

  • Duties may require the ability to travel via automobile or airplane, up to 10% of the time.
