Job Description & Qualifications:

We are seeking outstanding candidates to join our growing Autonomous Vehicle (AV) Future Tech team! AVs are an important part of Ford’s future, and we’re looking for the best and brightest. The role will require critical thinking, problem solving capabilities, and a “get it done” attitude to supervise a hardware group developing sensing and compute platform solutions across multiple applications supporting AVs.

What you’ll be able to do:

  • Supervise small team of engineers tasked with testing and deploying various sensors (CMOS cameras, radars, LiDARs etc.) for use in AV applications.

  • Supervise a team developing embedded FOG and EDGE compute platforms for infrastructure-to-vehicle applications that support connected vehicle and AV applications.

  • Elicit requirements from various stakeholders to support the selection of cameras, LiDARS, thermal cameras, radars, etc. for use in object detection, classification, and tracking applications;

  • Elicit requirements from various stakeholders to support the selection of embedded compute solutions for Edge and Fog platforms that will be used to perform object detection, classification, tracking, and intent prediction.

  • Maintain an expert level of knowledge in visible CMOS camera technologies; imagers operating in the short and long-wave infrared; LiDAR technologies (mechanically scanned, solid state, FMCW, flash, etc.); imaging radars; terahertz sensors, and other emerging sensing technologies.

  • Develop, deploy, and perform sensor validation/verification methods;

  • Work closely with suppliers to obtain optimized sensing solutions, provide sensor performance assessments, develop validation tests, etc.

  • Support collaboration with the sensor modelling and perception teams, and other partners across the organization;

The minimum requirements we seek:

  • Master’s degree in Electro-Optics, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or scientific field of study

  • Five or more years of experience in optical engineering product development or research with a focus on sensor technologies

  • At least two years of experience supervising a team of engineer/scientists

  • Two or more years programming in at least one relevant language (Python, R, C++, Java, Ruby)

Our preferred requirements:

  • PhD in Electro-Optics, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Robotics or related field

  • Systems engineering experience;

  • 2+ years of experience defining requirements;

  • Familiarity with artificial intelligence and machine learning concepts;

  • Familiarity with embedded compute concepts, hardware, architectures, etc.

  • 3 + years’ experience with autonomous vehicles and/or robotics;

  • A proven understanding of optical sensors, radars, lasers, LED’s, cameras, and CMOS devices;

  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of delivery for mission-critical functionality;

  • Knowledge of MS Office products

  • Strong problem-solving capability

  • Strong communication skills to communicate sophisticated engineering issues across a variety of teams
